🌹Rose
The rose is one of the most prominent symbols of Aphrodite, linked to passion, desire, and the bittersweet nature of love.
Creation Myth: Some legends say that the first rose bushes grew from the sea foam as Aphrodite was born.
Red Color Origin: The red color of the rose is often attributed to Aphrodite's pain and mourning for her mortal lover, Adonis. In one version, she cut her feet on the thorns of a white rose bush while rushing to his aid, staining the petals red with her blood. In another, roses sprang from the mixture of her tears and his blood where he died.
Usage: The fragrant oil and petals were used by priests and priestesses in sacred rites and by lovers, and Aphrodite herself is depicted adorned with roses.
🌿 Myrrh
Myrrh's connection to Aphrodite is deeply tied to the myth of Adonis, as the plant represents love and immortality.
Adonis' Birth: Adonis' mother was Myrrha (or Smyrna), who was transformed into a myrrh bush to save her from her father's wrath. Adonis was then born from the tree.
Sacred Plant: Both the myrtle tree (Greek myrsine) and the myrrh bush (smyrna) were considered sacred to Aphrodite because of this association with her beloved Adonis.
Usage: Myrrh essential oil is one of the scents, along with rose, used in modern spiritual practices to invoke the goddess's blessings.
🌊 Sea Scents
The sea is central to Aphrodite's origin and identity.
Birth from the Sea: According to Hesiod's Theogony, Aphrodite was born from the aphros (foam) of the sea after the castration of the sky god Uranus. She is often depicted emerging from a seashell (Venus Pudica).
Domain: Her temples were often located on the coast, and she was revered as a patron of seafarers.
Associated Scents/Items: This connection is the source of "sea scents" or marine notes associated with her, such as the smell of sea salt, and items like seashells and pearls are among her sacred attributes. The herb rosemary, whose name rosmarinus means "dew of the sea," is also linked to the goddess, as it was said to have adorned her when she rose from the waves.
